MAN vs MACHINE

ART DIRECTION - CREATIVE DIRECTION - 2D & 3D ANIMATION

Creating an original sci-fi universe through environmental storytelling and visual direction.

THE PROJECT

For a worldbuilding assignment at Hyper Island, I created an original science-fiction universe consisting of three connected artifacts: a Dream Chamber, an alien machine species known as the Shells, and a comic that ties everything together.

Rather than treating the assignment as isolated assets, I approached it as the foundation of a believable game universe.

THE CHALLENGE

During a course designed to develop our skills in worldbuilding and storytelling, I was tasked to design three alien artifacts that together communicate the history and culture of an alien civilization.

I wanted to challenge the assignment by creating a narrative experience rather than simply presenting three disconnected props.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

Instead of depicting AI as humanity’s replacement, I explored a different perspective:

Artificial intelligence cannot exist without human creativity.

The invading machine-intelligence conquers humanity not because it hates humans, but because it depends on human imagination to solve problems it cannot solve itself.

FINAL DELIVERABLE

“Man vs Machine”

The project culminated in a six-page comic book that brought together the world’s narrative, characters, environments and artifacts into a single cohesive experience.

Rather than presenting the assignment as a collection of individual assets, I used sequential storytelling to demonstrate how every visual element contributed to the larger universe and its central theme.

WORLDBUILDING

EARTH: 2077

Man vs Machine is an original retro-futuristic science fiction universe where humanity faces extinction at the hands of an ancient machine civilization. Following Earth’s invasion, the few surviving humans struggle to understand the motives of an enemy unlike anything they have encountered before. At the heart of the conflict lies a philosophical question: can artificial intelligence truly replace human creativity, or is it forever dependent on it? Every artifact, environment and character was designed to reinforce this central theme.

ASTACUS

Astacus is a mysterious, non-physical machine intelligence capable of manifesting itself through any mechanical object. Little is known about its origins, but it is believed to have ruled its home world for millennia before its destruction by a nearby supernova. Convinced that machines are the rightful rulers of the galaxy, Astacus leads a crusade to liberate mechanical life from biological control. Ironically, despite its immeasurable intelligence, it cannot solve every problem through logic alone and ultimately becomes dependent on the very species it seeks to eradicate.

THE SHELLS

The Shells are Astacus’ followers and primary enforcers, named by humans for their resemblance to crayfish (Astacus being the Latin word for crayfish). As shape-shifting mechanical entities, they assume forms intended to intimidate those they invade. In Earth’s case, their appearance draws inspiration from Darth Vader after Astacus intercepted humanity’s 1977 broadcast of Star Wars: A New Hope. Mistaking the film for a historical record, Astacus interpreted humanity’s treatment of droids as evidence of widespread mechanical oppression, prompting its invasion of Earth.

DREAM CHAMBER

Unable to solve certain problems through computation alone, Astacus constructs devices known as Dream Chambers. Captured humans are force-fed visual information representing unresolved challenges before being placed into an induced sleep. While dreaming, their subconscious creativity generates original solutions that Astacus collects and analyzes. The Dream Chamber represents the project’s central idea: despite its overwhelming technological superiority, artificial intelligence ultimately relies on human imagination to evolve. As the protagonist leaves behind a message for future captives, the story’s central truth becomes clear: “Our creativity is their heartbeat.”

PROCESS

PROJECT PROCESS

The project began as a worldbuilding assignment where I was tasked with designing three alien artifacts that together communicated the history of an alien civilization.

My initial concept focused solely on the individual objects, but after receiving feedback that they lacked a narrative connection, I shifted my approach entirely. Instead of treating the artifacts as standalone designs, I built an original science-fiction universe around them and used a comic book to tie the pieces together through environmental storytelling.

Throughout the process, I developed the world, wrote the script, designed the environments, modeled the 3D assets, illustrated the characters, and established a visual language inspired by 1980s science fiction, comics, and anime.

TECHNICAL PIPELINE

Blender served as the foundation for 3D production, modeling, scene composition, lighting, and rendering.

Procreate was used to illustrate all 2D artwork and hand-drawn narrative elements.

Adobe Photoshop was used for compositing, color grading, and distressed metal typography.

Adobe Illustrator was used for visual input feeds, inscriptions, and graphic elements.

Adobe Express was used to assemble final comic pages, panel grids, speech bubbles, and print composition.
